How To: Blend Clip In Hair Extensions With your Natural Hair
So, you’ve decided to buy clip-in hair extensions, but you’ve got no idea how to use them? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there! Although clip in extensions are very simple to use, it can be difficult to know how to blend them in with your natural hair and hide those strong little clips. Luckily for you however, Curly Vision know a thing or two about hair extensions and how to ensure they look as natural as possible. So to get the perfect, blended look, simply follow these steps and read on!
Choosing the correct weight
Firstly, it's important to choose the correct weight of clip ins. If you have short hair such as a bob or lob or mid length, then you will need a set of Charlie's Angels which are 180 grams. The reason is that if you do not have enough hair then when you apply your clip ins a clear break will be visible in the hair between the bottom of your natural hair and the clip ins (look at the picture below for an example).
Example of poorly blended hair extensions
If you longer fuller hair passed your shoulders then 180 grams Charlie’s Angels is still a great weight to add maximum thickness and volume, however you will be able to get away with using a lesser weight, such as our Double Trouble 100 grams.
Use only the best quality hair
With so many options to choose from, and with prices ranging drastically between different clip in brands it can be confusing knowing which clip ins to choose. What’s important to know is that the quality of the hair will massively impact how well they blend with your natural hair. Starting at the bottom of the quality scale is “synthetic” hair, which is in effect non-natural and not real hair. These clip ins are the cheapest option costing as little as $10 however as they are usually made from plastic-based materials, they can’t be styled to create waves or curls and hot tools cannot be used on these. Synthetic hair will look very shiny and glossy so you will typically know straight away, however also beware of real remy human hair that also looks very shiny and glossy as this usually means that the hair has been treated with a solution to give it that appearance. You will be disappointed that this solutions will fade within a few wears and washes, potentially leaving behind poor quality and damaged hair.
Curly Vision Hair Extensions are made of only the highest quality real remy human hair. This means that the cuticles are intact and the hair is aligned in a single direction to avoid shedding and frizziness. Real human hair can also be treated exactly as you would you own hair, so you can heat, curly, straighten and style as you like!

Get the right colour
This is the first mistake many people make. Getting the wrong colour will result in you never quite getting the look you want. And no matter what steps you take going forward, your extensions will always look fake and stand out a mile. That being said, they don’t have to be the exact match and can be a shade or two different as once you blend them with your natural hair the colour will naturally blend. Curly Vision clip ins come with a multi-tonal adaptation colour system, which means that just like your natural hair, the hair has slight tonal differences to create a perfect blend. Don’t forget, if you’re still worried you can take the clip ins to your hairstylist to have them toned or coloured to your desire, or why not even tone them yourself at home as this is really easy to do.
If you’re considering purchasing clip ins, then don’t hesitate to send a picture of your hair and ask for some help. At Curly Vision, you can use our personal Colour Match Service so if you’re completely unsure or just want some certainty on which colour to choose, you can simply upload a picture of your hair in natural light and a member of our customer support team will respond within 48 hours (usually less!).
TOP TIP: Don’t forget, your hair colour looks different depending on the lighting conditions. When choosing which clip ins colour is for you, ensure that you match it to the colour of your hair in when it’s in natural light. All Curly Vision product images are taken in natural light for easy comparison.
Why not go for an ombre look? Ombre is perfect for blending with your natural hair as they are made up of two distinct colours that blend across different tones.

Get them styled
Another mistake that will make your extensions stand out is failing to get them styled in-line with your own hair. If you rock a feathered, layered look for example and clip in blunt extensions, they will never look like your natural hair – no matter how hard you try. Curly Vision clip ins are 22” inches long, which means that you have more than enough hair to style as desired. We would always recommend taking your clip ins to your hairstylist to have them blended - you might want to have a straight cut to align with your own hair or even have them layered to create a stunning look. This looks was created using Charlie’s Angels 180 grams Ice Blonde extensions and by curling the bottom of the hair using tongs. If you have blondes, by curling you can help blend slightly different colour shades.

Prep the hair
Now it’s time to actually put them into your hair. The clips will need something to grip on to, so it’s down to you to do the groundwork. Spray some hairspray onto the roots where you’re planning on pinning in your extensions, then tease the hair with a small comb to create a thicker base and stop the clips sliding down your locks.
When applying your clip ins you need to ensure that they are within the “safe zone”. We recommend keeping your clip ins within this zone as this is where your clips are likely to be less visible, especially if you have fine or thin hair.
Fortunately, Curly Vision clips are the same colour as the hair so they are virtually undetectable.
Style from there
Curling the hair will make it look wholly more natural than keeping it straight – particularly if you’re new to extensions. Make sure you curl the extensions when they’re in your hair to ensure the curls go the same way and the extensions blend seamlessly with your real hair. If you decide to keep it straight however, there’s no need to do this. Remember, only real hair extensions can be used with heat!

Give them a shake
After you’ve clipped them in and styled them how you want, give them a good shake to ensure they blend with your real hair. You can do this by running your fingers through the hair from underneath your neck towards the top of your head but try to avoid tugging on the clips.
Keep them clean
You will need to wash them to ensure they stay in tip top condition. So when they start to look lacklustre or have a lot of product build-up, give them a gentle wash with a conditioning shampoo and let them dry naturally to keep in the moisture. It’s also important to store your hair extensions safely otherwise if left lying around they are bound to tangle. You might have an old jewelry box laying around or heat tool box. If you’ve purchased a set of Curly Vision clip ins then these come with a perfectly sized box to store your hair, or if you’re going on holiday or a regular traveller then our hair extensions travel kit is perfect to keep them safe! If you look after your clip ins just like your own hair they can last up to two years depending on how often you wear them.
